Being a history buff, I find it refreshing to read a book, even fiction, that deals with history. Kermit Lopez's book, Cibolero, certainly deals with old west history, but closely examines people and perceptions, rather than one historical event.

It is widely accepted that the Spanish descendants that populated New Mexico and Texas were held in low regards by most Americans. The Spanish of that area, being of a different culture and background were not understood, or accepted, by the newly arriving settlers from the United States. Lopez's fictional account of the brutalizing of the family, and kidnapping of the daughter of Antonio Baca, relates the emotions that are probably very real to those of Spanish descent during the time period of his story, and sadly were based on their experiences with Americans.

Cibolero is a western adventure full of suspense, action and passion. Kermit Lopez has penned a story full of danger, good and bad men, and the love of a man for his family. About a tough country, and the strong men that conquered it. An exceptional look into the past, from a very different perspective. I give Cibolero 4 ½ Stars!
